‘Schoolyard Soul’ – The Rebelles + The Sweethearts with DJ Vince Peach

Dear girl group fans, are you mired in the winter doldrums? Too much work and not enough play? Well the Rebelles have planned a special show to give your inner child a reason to dance! On Saturday 16 September, they will return not only to Kindred Bandroom, but also to their memories of schooldays past, to bring you an evening celebrating schoolyard soul.

The Rebelles will haul out from their battered old schoolbags some tunes – both originals and girl group classics – based on playground chants and clapping games. They’ll celebrate in song some of life’s simpler pleasures, like popcorn, sunshine and rollercoasters. And you know it wouldn’t be a trip back to school without a ditty or two celebrating young love. The Rebelles may have been around the Melbourne music scene long enough to make you wonder if they can remember their school days at all, but any such uncharitable thoughts will soon be forgotten as you are carried away by their delectable harmonies and foot-stomping beats.

Their playground rivals/besties – isn’t it always both! – for the night will be the Sweethearts, a band whose soul smarts belie the fact that they are in fact still in school. These ladies definitely know a thing or two about infusing funk, blues and, of course, soul with youthful energy and pizazz. If you haven’t yet caught one of their live shows over the last 30 plus years, now is the time to catch up on that long overdue homework.

Keeping a watchful, headmasterly eye over proceedings will be none other than the legendary Vince Peach. As presenter on PBS FM of the longest-running soul radio show in the known universe, you know that he can and will teach everyone present some lessons on soul. He’ll be bringing some of his finest records to play a DJ set once the bands are done – after all, it’s not a school night!
